Weddings

Whether you're just contemplating marriage, or already planning your wedding day,St. Bartholomews Church wants to help and support you.

The Church of England have a really good website with everything you could possibly need for planning your perfect wedding.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people get married in England. More than half tie the knot during a religious ceremony which, for 200,000, about a third of the total, involves the Church of England. It is the most important day in their lives.

Whether you are a regular churchgoer or not, getting married in church allows you to make solemn promises to the one you love, not only in front of your family and friends but also in the sight of God and with God’s blessing. There are legal reqirements on who can marry at St Bartholomew's (or in any other CofE Parish Church) and here they are:

Banns

Your banns will be called at St Bartholomew's on the first three Sundays of the month before your wedding. (For example, if you are getting married in July, they will be called on the first three Sundays in June).¨If one of you lives in another parish you must see the parish priest there within three months of your wedding to arrange for the banns to be read there as well. This is most important. You will need to collect a certificate from that parish to show that the banns have been called. This certificate is a legal requirement and you cannot be married without it. (If you both live in this parish this does not apply).

  • at least one of the couple must reside in the parish of Wigginton
  • OR if neither reside in the parish then at least one of the couple must be on the Church Electoral Roll  [NB: this is different from the Register of Electors.  To qualify for membership of the Church Electoral Roll you must attend worship regularly (once a month) for a minimum period of six months]
  • OR when there is a proven link between the couple and the parish ie family live here, you lived here as a child and was baptised or confrmed in St. Bartholomew's.

Your parents or grandparents were married in St. Bartholomew's

We have available also the choir and organist from St. Mary's in Northchurch, the other church in our Benefice
